Pain Relief using Psychotherapy, CBT, EMDR, NLP and Hypnotherapy
The use of hypnosis in pain control can be very successful and can provide relief or control for acute and chronic pain.
Have you ever cut yourself without realising it until some time later? And it was only when you actually noticed the cut that it started to feel painful. Up until that moment, your mind had successfully ignored the pain signals from your body. This is actually something that we are all naturally able to do.
Before chloroform was discovered, a doctor named James Esdale, discovered that hypnosis could be used to produce anaesthesia. From 1845 using only hypnosis he successfully performed many operations, including amputations.
What is pain?
Pain is your bodies warning mechanism and it lets you know something is wrong and that your attention is needed. It alerts you very quickly to situations that could potentially be very harmful to you, such as touching something hot. It also reminds us when we have an existing injury, to take care and not do anything which may make the injury worse. It is therefore extremely important not to turn off or reduce the pain without first identifying and treating the underlying cause. Therefore it is essential that you have consulted with your doctor before making an appointment.
There are of course types of pain that will continue long after you’ve done everything you can to deal with the underlying causes. Chronic pain such as arthritis and back pain are common examples of this.
How can you control pain?
Pain control can work in three ways.
1. Relaxation
When people are in pain, their muscles tense which can exacerbate the pain.
2. Sensory Alteration
The signals sent by our body are actually interpreted and perceived as pain within in our mind. There are many techniques that we can use to change that interpretation, so that our resulting perception of the pain is also altered to the point where the pain can be turned off or reduced.
3. Distraction
Your mind simply focuses on something else, either external to you or sensations in some other part of your body, reducing the attention you’re paying to the pain. Its just like when you cut yourself without realising it and you don’t actually feel any pain until you become aware of the cut some time later. Up until that moment, your mind had successfully been distracted.
What can it be used for?
These techniques can be used as a safe, natural alternative to anaesthetic for surgery or for controlling more chronic pain such as arthritic joint pain.
Here are just a few examples:
Arthritic joint pain
Back pain
Burns
Dentistry
Childbirth
Injuries
Degenerative illnesses and complaints
Medical & minor surgical procedures
