Clinical Supervision in Manchester
I am a fully qualified UKCP approved supervisor and offer supervision to both qualified and trainee counsellors and psychotherapists. I use an integrative approach to both my therapeutic work and supervision.
I have been working in private practice using various psychological therapies on a full-time basis since 2002. My therapeutic approach is integrative and includes modalities such as Gestalt, Humanistic, Existential, Psychodynamic, Cognitive, Behavioural, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, EMDR, NLP and Ericksonian Hypno-Psychotherapy.
I am available for supervision sessions during the daytime and evening, and am available for both face-to-face supervision, as well as online sessions via Skype.
What is supervision?
Clinical supervision is a process which aims to provide a supportive alliance between you and a supervisor, in order that you can maintain the highest standards of working and continue to develop your professional skills and yourself as a professional. You benefit from insights gained from having the additional more detached perspective of the supervisor.
Supervision also aims to ensure that your practice is ethical and that your client’s well-being is being maintained. Supervision protects the client by involving an impartial third party in your work with your clients. This helps you reduce risk of oversight and overstepping of boundaries. It helps you to reflect on your work, thoughts, feelings, interactions and general approach with your clients. All this helps improve the value you provide to your clients and ensures continuing professional development of yourself and your skills.
It should also be borne in mind that supervision is a mandatory requirement for registration to many governing bodies such as the UKCP and BACP.
Why do you need Supervision ?
- To help you to obtain clarification of your therapeutic work
- To help you maintain the highest standards of working
- To share experiences
- To gain insight and help yourself develop your skills as a therapist
- To give you time to reflect on your work
- To Develop awareness
- To build your confidence as a therapist
- To maintain ethical boundaries
- To provide an opportunity to reflect and discuss your work
- To learn new skills
- To consider new perspectives
- To satisfy the supervision requirements of your governing body
What supervision is not?
- Supervision is not training
- Supervision is not personal therapy
It is really up to you to ensure that you have received a high enough standard of training to be in practice. Supervision is not about training or personal therapy, the exception to this would usually be discussion or demonstration of specific concepts or techniques as a suggestion or an alternative aimed at broadening your skills and perspectives.
One of the purposes of supervision is to ensure you work safely within the limits of your training, experience and ability so that you protect your own well-being, and you do no harm to your clients. Supervision is also about helping you to grow as a professional so you will be continually encouraged to expand the limits of your skills, experience and confidence.
It is also up to you to ensure that you are of a sound enough mind to be in practice. If it is noticed that any of your own personal issues are intruding into and affecting your client sessions or your practice, this will be discussed. Personal therapy may be suggested. Due to boundary issues it is not usually considered appropriate for therapy to be provided by your supervisor.
As a supervisor I can provide and offer guidance with:
- Developing your practice
- Enhancing effective work with clients
- A supportive and empathic setting for you to discuss your client work
- Provide an impartial perspective
- Developing your professional skills
- Helping you to maintain ethical boundaries
Why is clinical supervision important for therapists?
It is important for therapists to be supervised for a number of reasons. Many therapists work in isolation and therefore do not have other therapists to use as a benchmark to compare themselves against. Even if they work alongside other therapists, the client sessions are usually carried out on a one-to-one basis and are therefore private and confidential. Supervision can act as that much needed external check.
Without a regular evaluation of confidence versus competence, the therapist’s confidence in their skills may be less than their competence. In this case, the therapist may not be developing their skills or practice as well as they potentially could. The opposite case would be when the therapist may begin to believe that they are far more skilled than they actually are. This could lead to inappropriate use of skills, which could be unethical or even dangerous for the client.
Supervision checks on the therapist, to encourage progress and keep them focused. Without supervision, the therapist may be unaware of mistakes that are being made or if they are aware of them they may be unsure of how to rectify the mistakes. Supervision ensures that the therapist does not breach ethical boundaries set out by their governing body which ensures the client’s well-being.
What therapies can you provide supervision for?
I mostly provide supervision for psychotherapists and counsellors who are either UKCP or BACP registered, as well as trainees working towards accreditation. Supervision is also helpful for a wide range of alternative and complementary therapies and practices. The supervision process helps you explore your practice from multiple perspectives and meta levels, therefore it is not entirely necessary for your supervisor to be trained in the exact same modality as you. In fact, it may actually help broaden your own understanding because you can benefit from the supervisors different training and experience.
Just a few examples of therapies I can offer supervision for :
- Psychotherapists
- Counsellors
- Clinical Hypnotherapists
- NLP Practitioners
- Life Coaches
- Business Coaches
- Ecotherapists/Wilderness Therapists
What form can the supervision meetings take?
Meeting face to face is the preferred method, but if it is too far for you to travel I also offer supervision via Skype.
- In-Person supervision (preferred)
- Internet based supervision (Using Skype and a webcam)
- Telephone supervision
Frequency of supervision sessions
The frequency of your supervision will largely be determined by the requirements of your governing body. Some governing bodies specify a minimum number of hours supervision per month, others require that you have supervision in proportion to the number of client contact hours.
If your governing body does not specify the exact number of hours of supervision, or you are not a member of a governing body, I would simply suggest you do one hour of supervision on a regular monthly or bi-monthly basis.
What qualifies you as a supervisor?
I am a UKCP approved supervisor and hold two accredited clinical supervision certificates, a Certificate in Supervision from The Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy, and an Accredited Supervisor Certificate which is accredited by the National Council of Psychotherapy (NCP) and General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR).
I have also been in full-time private practice as a therapist since 2002, and am a fully trained, qualified and UKCP registered and accredited psychotherapist, a BACP registered psychotherapist / counsellor, an EMDR Therapist, an NLP Master Practitioner, Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapist, Life Coach, and Ecotherapist.
