What is Depression?
Depression is a disorder that involves the body, mood and thoughts, and can affect the way you feel about yourself, the way you eat and sleep, and the way you think about things. Between 8-12% of the population will experience depression. Mixed anxiety & depression is the most common mental disorder in Britain, with almost 9% of people meeting criteria for diagnosis.
It is quite normal for most people to feel a little down or pessimistic from time to time. However depression is more than just a passing mood, so consider how frequently it happens, how severe is it when it happens, and how long it last each time. It is important to realise that depression is not a sign of weakness and that it is not easy for the depressed person to just ‘pull themselves together’ and get better by themselves. Without any form of treatment the symptoms of depression can often go on for months or years.
Symptoms of Depression
Depression may affect both the mind and body, so symptoms fall into three main categories, physical, behavioural and emotional.
This list below is not complete, and most people with depression will not experience all of these symptoms. The symptoms, or intensity of the symptoms may also vary over time.
Some Common Signs of Depression may include:
Persistant Sadness | Anxiousness | ‘Empty’ mood |
Sense of hopelessnesss | Pessimism | Feelings of Guilt |
Sense of worthlessness | Sense of helplessness | Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed |
Decreased energy | Feeling fatigued | Poor concentration |
Poor memory | Difficulty making decisions | Insomnia |
Change in appetite | Weight loss or gain | Thoughts of death, suicide |
Restlessness | Irritability | Inexplicable Aches and pains |
Inappropriate behaviour | Digestive disorders | Headaches |
Racing thoughts | Poor judgement | Feeling Defeated |
PLEASE NOTE: If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms then get them checked out by a doctor, psychiatrist or clinical psychologist right away.
The Depression Treatment in Manchester
The treatment for depression is available at the Manchester practice and is highly tailored to each persons requirements, so the exact form of treatment and number of sessions will vary from person to person. However for specific causes, improvements can be made in as little as 8 to 12 sessions of short-term therapy, for more deep rooted, chronic or very complex depression, mid to long-term psychotherapy and counselling will usually be a better choice.
The treatment uses an integrative approach and combines elements of Solution-Focused Integrative Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Behavioural Activation (BA), Somatic Therapy, EMDR, IFS, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Counselling, Hypno-Psychotherapy and life Coaching.
I am a fully qualified professional and a UKCP and BACP Registered Psychotherapist / Counsellor. I have also taken additional training in CBT, EMDR, IFS, and Somatic therapy. I combine all my skills and experience to produce a treatment that is tailored to your individual needs.
Sessions lasts 1 hour and are usually held at weekly intervals (see the consultation fees page for session prices.)

Booking is easy
NOTE: Before booking it is very important that you get your symptoms diagnosed by your GP or other medical practitioner.
I recommend booking an Initial Consultation/Assessment Session first. This gives us the chance to begin to explore your issues and your requirements further, give you honest answers to any questions you might have, give you a realistic estimate of the number of sessions you may require and begin the process of change.
When you are ready to make the inner changes you need, simply phone me on 07463 542368 or Click here to email to make an appointment now.
