Would I Benefit From Seeing a Psychotherapist or Counsellor?
We all experience painful feelings at one time or another in our lives. Many feelings such as sadness, fear, hopelessness, doubts, anxiety, stress and grief naturally arise as part of the daily ebb and flow of living our lives. However some problems are much more intense and persistent, and just don’t seem to go away. These are just some of the many issues that a counsellor or psychotherapist can help you with.
When Should I See a Psychotherapist or Counsellor?
You should consider seeing a counsellor or psychotherapist when your thoughts, feelings or behaviours overwhelm you so much that it becomes hard for you to function normally in your day to day life. Or when they are having a detrimental effect on your relationships or the quality of your life.
If you are stressed, tearful, have persistent anxiety or low mood, lack confidence, have poor concentration, lack direction, have low energy and motivation, are drinking or using drugs excessively, having trouble controlling your temper, have trouble eating or sleeping, or getting along with other people, then you should seriously consider psychotherapy or counselling.
About Nigel Magowan
I am a UKCP Accredited and Registered Psychotherapist (UKCP Reg.), a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP), an Accredited Contemporary Psychotherapist (AccMCCP), an EMDR Therapist, a Somatic Therapist, a Trauma-Informed Therapist and a Certified Personality Disorder Treatment Provider. Where appropriate I can integrate Psychotherapy / Counselling with CBT, EMDR, DBT Skills, DBR, IFS, NLP, Life Coaching, Somatic Therapy, Attachment-Focused EMDR, Hypno-psychotherapy and Ecotherapy. I am qualified to offer both brief therapy (short-term, usually between 6-18 sessions) and life coaching, as well as mid to longer-term psychotherapy and counselling. I’ve been in full-time private practice since 2002 and have completed literally thousands of client sessions at my Manchester psychotherapy and counselling practice over the years.
I believe everyone is unique and therefore there can be no ‘one size fits all’ approach. I, therefore, integrate all my training, skills and experience to produce a treatment that is highly flexible and unique to you and your personal needs. I have received additional specialist training in working with trauma (PTSD, Complex PTSD and complex trauma), Personality Disorders, attachment issues, addictions, anger management, panic and anxiety, treating IBS, managing pain, stress management, and nature-based therapies (Ecotherapy), human development and sexuality, psychopathology, teaching mindfulness, and ethical practice.
I am an Anxiety UK Approved Therapist, and also a fully trained clinical supervisor and am able to offer supervision to other psychotherapists and counsellors. All treatment at the Manchester psychotherapy and counselling practice is carried out privately on a one-to-one basis, in a highly constructive, relaxed, supportive and non-judgemental environment. Treatment is usually comprised of 60-minute sessions, held at regular weekly intervals. Longer sessions are available if you are travelling from further afield.
Booking
When you are ready to make the inner changes you need, to achieve the life you want, simply click the button on the left, or phone me on 07463 542368 or email me to make an appointment now at the Manchester psychotherapy and counselling practice.
Please book an Initial Consultation session first.
Where possible I prefer that people make their own enquiries, and book their own treatment as this shows that they are interested in and committed to their own therapy. Please do not book appointments or make enquiries on behalf of someone else unless you are their legal guardian, or you have discussed it with them first and you have their express consent to do so.
How can I be sure that you are the right therapist for me?
I understand that it is absolutely essential that you feel comfortable with your therapist. Which is why I offer an Initial Consultation Session with no obligation to continue.
This gives us the chance to meet face-to-face, take a detailed case history and discuss your problems, desired outcomes and the treatment process, in much more detail. Giving you the opportunity to ask any questions, before making up your mind about continuing with the treatment. You will get honest answers to any questions you might have and a realistic estimate of the number of sessions you may require. Also, this initial session gives me the chance to determine if I can help you. If I don’t believe that I can help, I will not waste your time and may refer you on to someone with more relevant experience.
If you have further questions and would prefer to have a brief chat before booking the Initial Consultation session then please call me on 07463 542368.

How many psychotherapy / counselling sessions will I need?
As everyone is unique this can be a very difficult question to answer without speaking with you in much more depth first.
Psychotherapy and counselling will require a regular and on-going commitment of your time and finances, with sessions usually taking place on a weekly basis. As personal change is often a gradual and accumulative process, it could take anywhere from just a few weeks, to a year or more, depending on the type and complexity of the issues you want to work on, your resources, and whether you want to focus on time-limited short-term therapy, or more open-ended longer-term psychotherapy.
For time-limited short-term therapy dealing with a very specific issue, you will usually need to budget for between 6 to 18 sessions.
For more deep-rooted, life-long, chronic, multiple or complex issues, longer-term psychotherapy and counselling lasting from a few months to a year or more would usually be more suitable.
After our initial consultation, I will have a much better sense of you, the issues you want to work on, your expected outcomes, and what you are prepared to commit to in terms of time, energy, and finances. I will then be in a much better position to give you an estimate of the possible duration of the treatment, what might be achievable within your budget, energy, and time constraints, and whether short or long term therapy may be most appropriate.
