What is Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) ?

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) occurs when someone is exposed to multiple, prolonged, repeated or accumulative traumatic events in a context in which the individual has little or no control.

Unlike traditional post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is typically associated with a single, traumatic event, C-PTSD is the result of ongoing, chronic trauma. This can include cases of prolonged abuse, or childhood neglect.

If this occurs during childhood it will impact the child’s ongoing psychological development.   It often occurs at developmentally sensitive times in the child’s life, especially in early childhood or adolescence.  It is interpersonal in nature and typically involves psychological maltreatment, neglect or emotional, physical or sexual abuse.  It usually occurs within the child’s primary caregiving system.

Treating Complex PTSD?

C-PTSD is often treated with a combination of therapy, medication, and self-care. Therapy for C-PTSD typically focuses on helping the individual process and come to terms with the trauma, deal with attachment issues, as well as developing new skills and coping mechanisms for managing symptoms. This can include cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), which helps the individual identify and change negative thought patterns. As well as therapies like eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), IFS, DBR somatic therapies and trauma-focused therapy, which can help the individual process and work through traumatic memories.  Childhood trauma usually causes attachment problems, so a range of therapies such as attachment-focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) can be used for attachment repair.

Some people may require medication to manage some of the symptoms of C-PTSD, such as depression and anxiety.  Self-care is also an important part of C-PTSD treatment and can include things like exercise, journaling, meditation or spending time with loved ones.

It’s important to note that healing from C-PTSD can be a long process, and it may take time for someone to fully recover. It’s also important to seek support and treatment as soon as possible, as the longer the trauma goes unaddressed, the more difficult it can be to overcome.

C-PTSD is a serious condition that can have a significant impact on an individual’s life. If you or someone you know may be experiencing C-PTSD, it’s important to seek help as soon as possible. With the right treatment and support, it is possible to recover and move forward with a more positive and fulfilling life.

Complex PSTD Treatment in Manchester

The trauma treatment utilises Herman’s Three-Stage Model of Trauma Recovery.
1) Safety and Stabilisation, 2) Processing traumatic memories, 3) Resolution and integration. In actual practice, the treatment is likely to be more fluid than this with frequent movement between the stages.

The therapeutic approach may combine psychotherapy with EMDR, CBT, Attachment Focused-EMDR, IFS, DBR, DBT, Focusing, Somatic therapies, NLP and Meditation.

As everyone is unique, the Complex PTSD treatment available at the Manchester psychotherapy practice is tailored to your individual requirements. The exact form of the treatment and number of sessions will vary from person to person. For Complex PTSD, Complex Trauma or developmental trauma, long-term therapy will almost certainly be required and may take some time.

The process will require a regular and on-going commitment of your time and energy, with sessions usually taking place on a weekly basis.
